How a coffee piles on calories
The sweetest, creamiest coffe sold at high street chains can contain hundreds of calories per cup, a report said.
A Starbucks large white chocolate mocha with whip made whole milk has 628 calories- nearly a third of the recommended daily amount for a woman.
One medium cup of whole milk caffe mocha with whip from the same chain has 396 calories, according to Which? magazine. A medium mocha with whipped cream made with semi-skimmed milk from Caffe Nero has 326 calories compared with 297 calories in a medium cup of mocha flake made with whole milk, cream and flake from Costa Coffee.
Opting for black coffee with no sugar cuts the calorie count to just 17 for a medium cup from Starbucks, Which? found.
A caffe lette made with skimmed milk from Costa Coffee has 71 calories while a medium cappucino made with skimmed milk from Caffe Nero has 27.
Eating a sweet treat alongside a cup of coffee also boosts the calorie count, Which? warns. A blueberry muffin from Starbucks has 591 calories, while a fruity flapjack from Costa contains higher levels of fat than its chocolate layer cake.
A survey of coffee shop prices by the consumer group found independent outlets were cheaper on average than the three big chains. Which? said: "The difference might seem small, but if you buy a cappucino on your way to work three days a week, you could save £126 a year by choosing an independent coffee shop."
